Meeting on Potential Applications and Needs for a Remote Sensing Data Center in Vietnam

Remote sensing (RS) is nowadays used in many different fields, such as coastal and ocean applications, hazard assessment and natural resources management. To date, there are many satellites that have been launched and more and more missions are providing free data to the scientific community worldwide. For example the Sentinel-1 satellite was successfully launched in April 2014, and according to the strategy of the European Space Agency (ESA), the Sentinel data are now freely accessible and regularly available. The research and application of RS are thus very promising directions in Vietnam as they would not request much infrastructure investment but researchers can still obtain the latest observation data and investigate scientific topics at international level.

To better identify the needs of the RS community of Vietnam in order to develop future research thematics at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), a meeting on “Potential Applications and Needs for a Remote Sensing Data Center in Vietnam” was organized from 15^th to 17^th March 2017 by the Department of Space and Aeronautics (SA) with strong supports from DRITT.

With the participation of more than 30 experts (French and Vietnamese), the discussions at the meeting have been actively taken place. Current developments and applications of remote sensing (RS) data within the Vietnamese RS community were presented, indicating an urgent need of a RS data center in Vietnam. The implementation steps of the data center were also discussed at the meeting.
